My Story (It's worth it, I promise)

Before I get started, I have a surprise and an offer at the end of this blog...you don't miss them!

I've been a believer and supporter of functional medicine for years. My 23 year old son is severely autistic and he's been seeing a functional practitioner off and on since he was 2, frankly whenever funds allowed. We've done HBOT, supplementation, just anything natural we could find, we'd try. So the functional space wasn't new to me. I thought about going back to school to become a functional medicine doctor, but at 50, just decided I didn't want to invest the time. I wanted to help people now. That's when I found the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (R) program. When I decided to pursue certification as a functional diagnostic nutrition-practitioner, like many, my health was headed in the wrong direction. I already had an anxiety disorder, allergies, asthma, high blood pressure and Alopecia Areata which had turned to alopecia universalis. My weight was up and down all the time. I had jeans in my closet from size 4-14. In June 2021 I was dx with Rheumatoid Arthritis after years and years of painful, swollen joints and fatigue, in October 2021 with Lupus and in March of 2022 with eczema. I started Hydroxychlorquine in June, doubled the dosage in October and was recommended Methotrexate but I refused it. I was also only sleeping about 3-4 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, then collapsing on the other day or two. Life felt hard.

Getting out of bed hurt...hard.

I looked in the mirror at my hair that wasn't there...hard.

My jeans were tight...hard.

My anxiety was high and I was just plain irritable and depressed...hard.

I was tired, not just need a nap tired, but could sleep for a month and would still wake up feeling exhausted, tired....hard.

I had no motivation to do much of anything....hard.

But one day, I woke up and, after a particularly rough period, I realized that everything is hard. I could either choose the hard that makes me miserable day in and day out and continue living the life I had been living OR I could choose the hard that at the end offered improved health and an elevated life. I had a choice.

They were both hard! Why would I choose the hard that would only result in sickness, more symptoms and, frankly, sadness???

So, that's when I changed. I always tell clients that they won't make changes until the perceived difficult changes are easier than the symptoms they deal with daily. That's where I was. The hard I was living was too much.

So I made a decision.

In October, as I was working my way through my coursework, I ran lab work, interpreted those results, created a protocol and started implementing everything I teach my clients. I was determined to stop this train from derailing, turn it around and head back to 1995 when I felt healthy, strong and vital. It was work. I won't lie. I didn't wake up, turn a switch and everything just happened. Honestly, it WAS hard.

I changed habits I had developed 50 years prior. I had to relearn how and what to eat . I had to learn to find peace and comfort in other ways. learned to address external AND internal stressors. I set boundaries. II addressed every area of my life. But, the outcome, oh the outcome was so very sweet!

In January, I had to switch medical teams because of insurance. My new rheumatologist ran a litany of tests...like 8 vials of blood. She looked deep. She took a look at all the labs I did with FDN (R) also and looked at them closely, using them in her evaluation.

Here's the sweet part. Results: In March, I went off amlodopine, blood pressure medicine. I monitor it closely and it's normal every day. It was 110/74 today. Yay! All 19 labs that were run by my endocrinologist and rheumatologist show zero signs of any connective tissue autoimmune issues. Zero. Not one lab shows anything. And, a lake of flare ups for almost 9 months supports that. Eczema is no longer present. I sleep 7-9 hours a night...straight. I also haven't had a panic attack in months. I am off of Hydroxychloroquine. I am off of all medication. I never use my inhaler. I don't even take my allergy pill regularly and I've taken that since I was 9! I volunteer at a horse stable which use to be a huge trigger....literally hugging on horses and I'm fine!

My motivation has improved greatly. I lead two small business networking groups, earned additional certifications, teach yoga, meditation, tapping and journaling. I write and pursue hobbies that bring me so much joy! I spend time with my family and I'm an active participant.

I'm present in my life. I cannot say enough about the experiences I have had going through this process. Hard? Sometimes. But, when that hard leads to a life I could only dream of, it was worth it.

Life is different these days. I don't gorge on brownies, pizza and pasta. I don't have my evening glass of wine or whiskey with a side of Oreos. An evening out consists of a steak instead of a fish fry and maybe a nice walk. Do I miss some things? Meh...sometimes.

But, what I have regained is invaluable. I look forward to waking up every day. I can't wait to see what the day will bring. It's a different outlook now. I absolutely love life and will never look back. How about you? Are you ready? Are you in a similar spot? What will it take for you to decide to really look deep and figure out what is going on with your body and how you can help it to heal? Not a band aid, quick fix, but really making changes that you and all those that you love will appreciate? Ready to run some lab work on yourself so that you can stop guessing?

Your victory story is waiting.
